Hidden deep within Cambodia’s Cardamom Mountains, this remote summit isn’t famous or easy access. There are no crowds waiting for sunrise, no cafés at the viewpoint, and no shortcuts to the top. Instead, there are endless forests, rolling grasslands, ancient sandstone cliffs, and a silence so profound that you can hear the wind moving through the hills.

Standing roughly 1,200 meters above sea level, Khnang Preah Ang is one of Cambodia’s most remarkable hiking destinations, a place where adventure and serenity exist side by side.

For me, this wasn’t simply another mountain to climb but it became one of the journeys that reminded me why I fell in love with Cambodia’s wilderness in the first place.

The Journey Begins

Located in Mong Ri Community, Pramoy Commune, Veal Veng District, Pursat Province, near the border with Koh Kong, Khnang Preah Ang lies within the vast Cardamom Mountain range, one of Southeast Asia’s largest remaining tropical forests.

The adventure begins the moment you leave Mong Ri Community.

The first day’s hike covered approximately 9 kilometers. The trail was surprisingly gentle, making it an enjoyable start to the journey. It gave my team and me plenty of time to appreciate the rainforest, listen to birds calling from the canopy, and immerse ourselves in the peaceful atmosphere of the forest.

Reaching the summit isn’t a one day journey. Instead of pushing straight to the top, we spent our first night camping deep inside the jungle, surrounded by towering trees and the sounds of the wild.

On the second day, my team and I hiked another 9 kilometers as the trail became much steeper and more challenging, climbing higher into the mountains. Yet it never truly felt difficult because every step revealed new scenery, crisp mountain air, and unforgettable encounters with nature. The breathtaking beauty of the wilderness made us forget our tired legs, reminding us that the journey itself was just as rewarding as reaching the summit.

With each step, the modern world quietly disappeared. There was no city noise. No endless stream of notifications.Only the rhythm of our footsteps and the sounds of nature guiding the way.

Walking Through Cambodia’s Hidden Landscape

One of the things that surprised me most was how diverse the scenery became. When people imagine the Cardamom Mountains, they often picture dense jungle stretching endlessly across the horizon. But Khnang Preah Ang tells a different story. Rolling green meadows unfold between rugged sandstone cliffs. During the rainy season, wildflowers bloom across the grasslands, Mist drifts slowly through the valleys below, creating an ever changing landscape that feels almost dreamlike.

Every turn offered another reason to stop. Not because I was exhausted. But because I simply wanted to admire what was in front of me. Sometimes the best moments on a hike aren’t found at the summit. They happen somewhere along the trail.

Near the summit are rock carved Buddhist artworks, etched into the stone by generations before us. Their presence adds another layer to the mountain’s story, reminding visitors that these landscapes have long been places of reflection, faith, and respect. Nature and culture exist together here. The mountain isn’t just beautiful. It’s meaningful.

Camping Inside the Jungle

Although it’s possible to camp at the 1,200 meter summit, the strong winds make it difficult and uncomfortable to stay overnight. Instead, local guides have established a campsite in a small forest just below the summit. Sheltered by the trees, it’s a much safer and more comfortable place to spend the night. The campsite also has a natural water source, providing fresh water for cooking, washing, and even taking a shower after a long day of hiking. Camping here isn’t just about having a place to sleep.

It’s about ending the day surrounded by nature, listening to the sounds of the forest, and waking up refreshed for the next adventure.

Chasing Sunrise

The alarm rang long before dawn. We climbed quietly toward the viewpoint while the landscape remained hidden beneath darkness. Then, almost without warning, the mountain transformed. Soft light appeared behind the horizon. Golden rays pierced through layers of mist. Clouds rolled gently across the valleys as the cliffs caught the morning light. For a few brief minutes, everything glowed.

It wasn’t just beautiful. It was unforgettable. No camera can truly capture the feeling of standing there. The photographs preserve the scene. The memory preserves the emotion.
